4th Annual Federation of BC Writers flash fiction contest is now BC-Yukon FLASH 2020

Submissions open September 1, 2020, for the 4th Annual FBCW flash prose contest, showcasing Canadian flash fiction talent in 500 words or less. Author Karen Schauber will judge BC-Yukon FLASH 2020.

Sponsored by the Federation of British Columbia Writers, the BC-Yukon FLASH 2020 is a competition for original, unpublished flash fiction by writers who are Canadian residents. There is no theme. The word length is a maximum of 500 words, including the title. Stories must be submitted in English. Entries are read blind.

PRIZE: First prize is $350 and a year’s FBCW membership.  

ENTRY FEE:

$10 for Federation of British Columbia Writers members. $15 for non-members.

* One story per entry.  

THE RULES:

·        All submissions must be made online through Submittable. 

·        The name of the entrant must not appear anywhere on the entry itself. 

·        Work must be original and not previously published. 

·        Submissions only accepted in MS Word, PDF or RTF format, in Times New Roman 12 Point font. 

·        The decision of the judge is final.

·        Staff and Board members of the FBCW and their immediate family are not eligible to enter. 

DEADLINE:

The deadline for submissions is midnight, PST, October 1, 2020. 

WINNER:

The names of finalists, the title of their submission, and community will be announced on the Federation website (bcwriters.ca) and social media by October 30. The winner will be announced on FBCW social media and through an email to all FBCW WriteOn subscribers on November 15, 2020. The winning entry will be published in WordWorks Magazine, the magazine of the Federation of BC Writers. The judge may also name runners up. Runners up will receive a one-year free membership with the Federation of BC Writers.

ABOUT CONTEST JUDGE KAREN SCHAUBER:

Karen Schauber is a Flash Fiction writer obsessed with the form. Her work appears in 50 international literary magazines and anthologies, including Bending Genres, Ekphrastic Review, Fiction Southeast, New Flash Fiction Review, and Spelk Fiction. The Group of Seven Reimagined: Contemporary Stories Inspired by Historic Canadian Paintings (Heritage House, 2019), celebrating the Canadian modernist landscape painters, is her first editorial/curatorial flash fiction anthology. Schauber runs ‘Vancouver Flash Fiction’, a flash fiction Resource Hub and Critique Circle, and in her spare time, is a seasoned Family Therapist in private practice. A native of Montréal, she has called Vancouver home for the past three decades.
 
Karen is a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, Canadian Authors Association, and Federation of British Columbia Writers.
