FBCW Emerging Writer Mentorship Program

Call for Applications: Emerging Writers from Equity-Seeking Groups

Application deadline: April 15, 2025 (11:59pm)

As part of the Federation of BC Writers’ mission to uplift diverse voices and share the stories of marginalised people, we are launching an Emerging Writer Mentorship Initiative. We are actively seeking participants from equity-seeking groups, which may include people of colour, 2SLGBTQ+ folk, Indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities.

Our vision is to help support writers in reaching the next level of their literary journey. We know how important it is to get initial publishing credits, as many publications require proof of work to be given true consideration—which can create an added burden for people in equity-seeking communities. Our goal is to help participants begin building a body of work for their professional curriculum vitae, as well as develop their skills so they can be successful in landing future publication opportunities.

What is included in the program:

  • Receive one-on-one mentorships with writers from their own equity-seeking group
  • Have free access to a series of online workshops addressing practical aspects of the craft and business of writing
  • Write a 550 - 1,000-word article for publication in a special edition of WordWorks magazine or WordWorks Online
  • Write a second article reflecting on their experience in the mentorship program
  • Receive a contract and fair market compensation for their published articles
  • Have the opportunity to share their work with the larger community at a public online reading event

Who Qualifies

Applicants must:

  • Be at the beginning of their writing careers, with little to no publication history
  • Live in BC or Yukon
  • Be from an equity seeking/deserving community
  • Must be 19 or older to apply

How many people will be accepted into the program?

  • Up to twenty participants will be accepted into the program.

Cost:

  • Your time, energy, and commitment to the project

What is the application process?

  • As part of the application process, applicants will submit one or two pitches for an article or story suitable for publication in an issue of WordWorks Magazine: “Our Voices, Our Stories.”
  • Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with a mentor to revise and refine their article pitch.

What are some ideas for pitches?

WordWorks is a magazine for BC and Yukon writers. This is your opportunity to be heard by writers from beyond your community. Ideas for your story proposal might include:

  • What writing means to you
  • How writing has helped you find your voice or express your identity
  • How you've developed your writing practice and/or any mentorship you've had
  • Information or perspectives you would like to share with the broader writing community
  • Your goals or vision for yourself as a writer
  • The impact another writer from your community has had on you
  • Something else you'd like to share that fits with the theme "Our Voices, Our Stories."

When is the deadline to apply?

April 15, 2025 (11:59pm)
